Kinja'd!!!

So, last week I was driving to one of my friends homes for a small get-together of friends, I was on a pretty deserted highway I use to get to his place because it is much shorter distance and it involves no bumps or stoplights.

I was driving and around a quarter of the way there I start getting harrased by some douche in a white current-model 3 Series into moving out of the fast lane, since I could see a slower car not even 100 meters in front on the right lane, I decided to move over after overtaking said car, but he wouldn’t have it; on the 10 seconds it took to pass the slow car he flashed his lights and even tried to overtake me in a non-existent gap in the right lane, almost crashing into the slower car that was there and going into the emergency lane to avoid him.

So I decided this idiot was getting a bit of a lesson from my Z on what an acually fast car looks like, so I accelerated up to about 160 kph (100 mph), he started dropping off, but was very much still able and willing to try to catch and pass me, so I took it up another notch (120+ mph) until after a while I could not see him anymore, so I relaxed the pace a little into more cruising speed and went on my merry way, cruising at what turned out to be around 190 (110+ mph as indicated) (over the speed limit, but no cop will pull you over for this)

About 1 km before where I was turning off I see a cop, so I decide to step down closer to the 80kph speed limit, I pass him and shortly after he flashes his lights and signals for me to pull over, after all the introductions and documentation and so on, I ask why he is pulling me over...

He looks blankly at me for a second and responds: I clocked you at over 180 kmh...

My face when I remembered that the Z has the speedo on mph and I was actually going 120 mph , by the time I braked when I saw the cop I was still going over 100 kmh (60 mph) over the speed limit without noticing.

So, that leaves me wondering Opponauts, how fast have you’ve been clocked by a member of the 5-0?

I’m also curious at how that impacts the legal and financial consecuences where you live, because for us, you get fined the same way when you go 20 kph over the speed limit, no matter how much over than 20 kph you were going.

—————————————

EDIT: Apparently the post as was written confused some people into saying that I was trying to trick you all into thinking I broke the laws of physics by V-Maxing a 350Z in public roads in the third world, that is not what happened and I hope it is clearer to read now.

I apologise for the confusion, around 97% of you didn’t get confused so I would hope it’s not so bad, I was rushing to the story so people wouldn’t get bored halfway through it and actually read it.

OOPS.

My personal record is 30 MPH (~50KPH) over the speedlimit in a 35MPH (~55KPH) zone. When I handed the officer my license and registration card my shooting range membership card fell out of my wallet... It turns out he was a member at the same range, we talked about guns for almost a 1/2 hour and then he went back to his cruiser, comes back with a ticket and says:

“I *HAVE* to give you a ticket for this, but it’s been nice talking to you.”

I open the envelope...

Cited for 10 MPH over and minimum fine ($90 and 2 points)

Kinja'd!!!

it could have been SOOO bad.

What kind of fine does that get you?

No extra bad stuff for getting caught 3 times?

This is really only my second fine, the first one I was much younger, they caught me at 50 kph over, when the officer told me I said: “Must have been at a corner then..” To be young and stupid.

They are all separated by about 2 and a half to 3 years. Got the most recent one last month. Fine is 227.50 and 3 points but I’m working on getting it lowered. The problem is that I got it 40 minutes south of home in the middle of nowhere Tennessee on I-65. The other 2 were 20 over in much lower speed limits but were $90 and traffic school with no points and the ticket gets dropped.

I think that’s not actually a bad system, but I think for US roads, most speed limits are insanely low, such infrastructure and you don’t even get to use it, I got fined on one of the better roads around here, I think the only place where I would have been able to go steady 180 kph withough bouncing into stratosphere.

On Canal Road in DC in the 80s - cop pulls me over and angrily asks: “Do you know how fast you were going?” I said: “maybe 60?” limit there is 45, but I knew I could not bullshit him. He says “84 miles per hour, and I got a clean reading.” I said: “Officer, this is a Rabbit diesel, and the only way to get it to go that fast would be to drop it out of a plane.” The veneer cracked a bit, he laughed, and wrote me a warning for 64 in a 45.

Fastest I’ve ever been clocked was allegedly at 195mph (314kph)in a 911 Turbo. Allegedly also running without plates and did not stop.

The fastest I’ve allegedly been clocked and had to talk to an officer was 184MPH (297kph). It was an Jaguar XKRS GT and allegedly didn’t stop that time either. An officer came into the diner accusing us of speeding but catching up to us about a good 20 minutes later it could have been any XKRS GT and there was no ticket issued. In fact we had a nice coffee with the man.

The fastest I’ve been ticketed at was 70 kph in a 30 kph zone on my road bike with a team. I was singled out by two white officers (the team was all white aside from me being half asian). I received a stunt driving ticket alongside a past speeding ticket on my bike I lost in court and had to pay 1700$ (in Quebec the courts have an over 99% win rate).

Fun fact: I have over 15 moving violations but none of them in a motorized vehicle.

Also, in my opinon, move to the right if there’s fast traffic coming and your in the left or speed up to make your pass. Often if they’re flashing their lights like that (I do myself) they’re going significantly faster (e.g. I’d be doing 150kph while the passing car is usually only doing 110kph).

My worst was driving 79mph in a 50mph zone. The trooper picked 79 because at 80mph he would have probably towed the car. Luckily I went to court and he didn’t show up. Other faster times I have been lucky enough to avoid the rozzers, but I don’t speed into triple digits any more.

Story time: Back when Garmins were a thing and in-car navigation wasn’t so popular, my mom used a Garmin and would check the details on it for trip data and to figure out her average speed, max speed, gas mileage, etc. She was checking it one day and started screaming bloody murder at my dad, who high-tailed it out of the house. Apparently he had taken her Garmin, turned it on and proceeded to hit 143mph on his bike, only to return it to her car with that little 143mph top speed Easter egg on it. good times.

Not a ticket, but I did get stopped for going 30mph over the limit.

Full disclosure: It wasn’t a cop who stopped me; it was the instructor sitting next to me. The penalty was not passing my road test that day . Why was I dumb enough to drive like that, especially during a road test? It happened to be an active school zone at that moment, and I failed to read the times on the sign (which was not equipped with a flashing light).

Ah, a fellow alleged Speed Freak.

He wasn’t actually going that fast, I had passed him like a couple of minutes earlier and he was going the speed limit, it just took him a moment to turn on the Asshat-BMW-driver mode on his car to catch me.

Then again like I said I was passing a car that was going at 70 kph at most, I wasn’t gonna break my neck just because he wanted to pass me 5 seconds faster, I was even indicating to the right, he was just an ass, that could have easily caused a big crash with the slow car and myself and we are not to blame or suffer from a 320i driver´s hang ups.

4 cylinder diesel, but you could really get it moving if you were going downhill. 4 speed manual, nice tight German steering (no power assist, mind you) - I loved that little car. I had no idea I was going that fast, and I still think that, given the car and the conditions, I was probably in the mid-high 70s, but there you have it. That’s the only ticket I’ve ever talked myself out of ... Embassy Row in DC, out on Long Island near Montauk, almost in Tennessee (pulled off the highway and avoided) - that was seeing if my ‘97 SHO would hit 130mph (it would, barely).

No speeding tickets, just warnings. Most over was ~55 in what was apparently a 25...had no clue, it was a completely deserted fire road near he MIL’s house. I was so utterly clueless that the officer took pitty on me haha. The conversation went something like:
O: How fast were you going?

Me: um...around 55?

O: Speed limit on neighborhood roads is 25

M: Yeah, I was going 25 in the neighborhood

O: You said you were going 55

M: I was

O: Well, the speed limit on neighborhood roads is 25

M: *confused* Oooookay? I was going 25 in the neighborhood

O: You said you were going 55 in the neighborhood

M: I said I was going 55 but in the neighborhood I was going 25

O: But what were you going when I pulled you over?

M: 55

O: Right, so 55 in a 25

M: I thought you said 25 was in the neighborhood

O: It is

M: But I was going 25 in the neighborhood

O: Hold on

Came back with a warning after running plates and paperwork or whatever. It literally didn’t dawn on me that this abandoned road at least 10 miles from any house was considered a neighborhood road until hours later. I thought he was trying to tell me he’d clocked me in town or something. He probably thought I was a total moron (which I likely was).

I got pulled over in Missouri for going 80 in a 70. When the cop walked up to the window and said “I clocked you at 80, is that how fast you were going?” I managed to stifle a laugh before saying “yeah, that sounds about right.” Didn’t get a ticket either, though he did ask to search the van. Since it was insured in one state to my BIL, had temporary tags from a state halfway across the country, and was completely empty since the dealer picked me up at the airport to hand over the van I let him search it. Pretty sure a refusal at that point would have led to a long wait on the shoulder for a warrant to show up.

As for my speed, I had the cruise control set for... let’s paraphrase Steve Earle and say you’d be surprised how fast a 3/4 ton Chevrolet extended van will go.

I got a bogus one for 80 in a 45 in Phoenix (mind you, I was speeding, according to my GPS log, on a 6-lane-wide highway with sparse cars). If they clocked anyone, it was a douchbag that practically ran me off the road in a silver Mercedes (I remember this, as I saw a cop with a radar/laser gun on the overpass very shortly after the incident). A motorcycle cop rips up and tickets me about 2-3 miles later...

Then again, it could have been a flat out scam, considering AZ has stickers identifying rental cars and they knew they could extort it from me.

Couldn’t get out of it without going back to that shithole of a city and I wasn’t going to put more money in their coffers to go to a kangaroo court, anyhow.

I recently got tagged for 89 mph in a 55 zone, although it may have been a 65. So it was 34 or 24 over, after I had spiked the brakes. I was averaging somewhere between 95 and 105 for that trip. Ticket was ~$250 and 6 points. My insurance just happen to be due right before I had to send in the money. My plan is to not switch insurance carriers and hope they don’t run a check. I believe I was actually clocked at 125mph in a 65mph zone, so... 60mph over? The cop was pretty cool and just told me to pay attention to the speed limit (I saw him getting on the highway as I ripped past, so I slowed down some and let him get me). Wrote it for whatever it was that would allow me to just pay a fine and avoid it on my record with some kind of game (can’t recall, it was years ago). No complaints from me.

I have scarier stories. At least this wasn’t far from home... One time my buddy and I almost got arrested and our car impounded in Moab because we could afford gas but we couldn’t afford to get the car to pass smog and pay for registration. Ended up peeling a sticker off the old plates that came with the used van my mom bought earlier that year and slapping it on his plate. Then we proceeded to roll a stop sign late at night 250 miles from home right in front of a cop. Priceless. He said that the computer said it was out of registration, but the sticker on the plate looks legit... Let us off with a warning because he wanted to go home for the night.

I also got pulled over on the Masspike, also for 73 in a 65. The trooper was angry at me because I didn’t get that he was trying to get me to pull over (he was standing in the road rather than is his car, so I slowed down a ton not to hit him, but looked to me like he was trying to cross the highway). I got pulled over for doing 100+ heading back from Penn State with my GF at the time in tow.

It was a 55, and the cop was very understanding/didn’t get a proper reading of my speedometer indicated 112.

if speeding when you get a reckless here the 6 points is additional to whatever points that brings...I don’t remember how the points system tiers but I imagine one could get close or over. But damn, 12 points is a bad day. Not good for insurance rates...and don’t get me started about how much BS that is.

I’ve driven there!! Several times for the Grand Prix, it’s insane how fast some people drive there, during the GP I think every traffic cop in Texas just waits at some point there, they probably get most of their revenue just that weekend.

Oh, I though how many points until you get your license revoked here it’s 12 points, a speeding ticket gets you 3 I think, no fine gets you over 6.

Damn, I just read all the comments and it seems I am winning :|

Here is a story from that class - I was there for a 12 point ticket for simply speeding - nothing else has happened. While there, a super old lady was attending the same class. She made a left into oncoming traffic, either got clipped or simply freaked out, drove into a parking lot and hit three cars before she stopped. I remember that I was super pissed because I ended up with 4 points and she ended with 2 point after taking the class.

I did some more speeding at a later time, and had another class - different municipality. At this class, one of the attendees says “I covered my rear view mirror because cars behind me distract me when I drive”. I was about to face palm it, when the instructor says “ That’s a great idea!” I had to do it in my head, but I double palmed it.

A heartless lawyer could have probably argued that he needed to prove he clocked you instead of the other guy and probably could have gotten off.

But I don’t know what the burden of proof is like in the US for this sort of violation.

I was once clocked on my motorcycle in Indiana on the highway at 123mph in a 55mph zone. 11:30 at night with very very few cars on the road.

When I realized there was a cop behind me I pulled over and made his job as easy as possible. He called me a moron and then I was arrested for allegedly running... TWICE. Very long story... It was a bullshit charge and the cops all knew it.

I got my bike towed (and the front brake line snapped off by the tow company), spent 23 hours in processing and another 10ish or so in a cell. Charged with 2 counts of reckless driving and 2 counts of resisting. Got an attorney that cost $5,000 and eventually got 100 hours of community service and no fines. 12 points on my license too. Luckily insurance didn't check for at least 5-6 years and then I switched companies when I moved out of state so it never went up!

I don’t remember, I think it’s 12 here too. I was at 11 points with that and got a warning. 2 points for a 5 over, which they hand out like candy. The only time I’ve never got a “break” was with the reckless so I think my speeding ticket associated was 3 points for 82 in a 55.

Allegedly 92 in a 45 on a lakeside drive in my Audi Coupe...the officer was behind another car but there’s no way I could contest it. Worst reason ever I was just late for a meetup with my senior year sweetheart n got her mad.

I saw him far up the road coming the opposite direction...I think he blipped his lights. Either way after slowing down I’m already gawking at him like a scared idiot and the moment we passed, visibly pissed he jerked a pointed finger towards the shoulder as a signal to pull the fuck off the road and wait for me.

I deservedly got yelled, yelled at with the lecture of how dangerous what I was doing and had a feeling this wouldhave been a reasonable officer any other moment. Also got yelled at by the gf and then got my license suspended (for the 2nd time before tuning 19), this time for 6 months? A year?

Luckily I went to Colorado for college months later and already had my CO license (which took 5 freakin’ minutes to NY state’s 3 months!) apparently they don’t give a fuck about other jurisdictions.

Hmm, 94 in a 55 seems to be my sweet spot but my first was in my 1991 Taurus SHO (one of my favorite cars but sheesh what mechanical nightmare). Middle of nowhere southeast North Carolina. I had just put in two 20-hour days thanks to a customer complaint to our CEO and was trying to head home. The road was miles and miles of two-lane with some very occasional four-lane stretches.

I was behind a logging truck doing 30-40 mph for about a half hour when a four-lane section opened up. I had hung way back from the eighteen-wheeler in hopes this opportunity would present itself. When I first saw the four-lane road I dropped it into 2nd and beat that car like a rented mule.

I passed the truck on the left at around 105 and then tucked back into the right lane since the four-lane sections were scary short. I had backed off after passing the truck but not soon enough and got lit up by the most polite trooper I’ve ever met....probably in his late 50's, with the mandatory buzz-cut, and a Southern accent you could cut with a knife. He expressed surprise that I didn’t see him but apparently I had just passed the truck when he got me. so my attention was elsewheree.

To this day I can remember his parting words: “ Mr. E39Geek, I recommend you secure the services of a good attorney. ” Do that in a slow, deep Southern drawl and you’ll get the idea.

I took his advice and got it down to 63 in a 55, too.

You said you were doing 160kph, then you slowed down to 120kph. Then you said you realized it was really 120 mph, which means it had been 160mph before that.

And that’s what El Rocko said. He read perfectly.

160 mph is 260 kph is 230 feet per second. If the speed limit was 100kph (62 mph), he would have been passing other cars going 100 mph faster than the other cars. There are very few stretches of road in the world where this is even possible, especially for a sustained period of time as he wants us to believe.

I’ve been done twice, once at 122 in a 100 zone and 125 in a 100 zone. First one was a cop sitting on an overpass that I actually pulled off at anyway so that made it easy for him. Second time was coming home on a long trip and a mate and I were blasting through some windy stuff. Come out of a corner in this Audi Allroad V8, plant it, cop comes round the next one and pings me on the rear facing radar. Luckily he didn’t ticket me with the trailer I had since that would have been 35 over and loss of licence. Both times were $170 fine and 35 demerit points (of which you get 100, after that you get suspended from driving for 3 months).

Georgia statie got me 89 in a 55. Really cool about it. Wrote down 69 in 55 so no points and told me to call a number on the ticket to take care of it. The ticket was also a court summons if you chose not to pay the fine.

Been almost a month now and the court “still has no record of the ticket” so he might have just not filed it. At the same time this worries me because the court date is about a month out now, and I just want to pay the $120 or whatever it was.

After he released me I was the only car for miles in any direction. I saw another state trooper Tahoe on the side of the road. I pass him and he takes off after me, turning away at the last second. I know they were fucking with me because they could haha

They do, yes. In my situation the police thought that I was a guy that ran from them an hour earlier and got away. Cop that pulled me over said that I saw his dark blue unmarked police car (at 11:30 at night no less) and took off running “for the 2nd time.” When in reality I wasn't running at all. Just riding fast like a stupid 19 year old would do on his first motorcycle.

Back in my college days, the very first time I ever got pulled over was during a weeknight high speed run back to school after dealing with my racecar throwing a timing belt and getting it moved back home to where I could work on it. I left ABQ at about midnight that night in my MX6 and in a hurry to get back to school 85.6 miles away so I could get some sleep after thrashing all day with the broken racecar and before my 8am class. A deputy from the next county over claimed I had passed him (or he had somehow seen me going fast) somewhere in the city. Once I cleared ABQ proper, I might or might not have been cruising between 120 and 125mph, keeping an eye out for folks with badges and guns, ect... I never noticed that someone was pacing me about 1/2 mile back (by the cop’s admission). As I approached the next county I might or might not have dailed it back to between 100 and 110, as I knew that sheriff’s department was running a lot of traffic on the interstate in the Northern part of that county at the time. After I slow down, I eventually notice a set of headlights slowly gaining on me. I started to wonder who was going faster than me that night, and I soon found out. He lit me up, we pulled over, I never admitted to driving particularly fast, and mentioned that I was just trying to get back to school for class in the morning. He mentioned that he paced me at 123mph at one point in a 75mph zone. In the end, he wrote the ticket for 100 in a 75, and I exercised the court date option.

When the court date rolled around a few months later, I gambled (and didn’t yet know better) and plead no contest to the charge. It would’ve been a ~$350 ticket with 5 points. When the judge asked why I was going so fast, I told him that I was in a hurry to get back after caring for a sick friend (which was true, I just didn’t mention that the friend was my improved touring race car and I never mentioned how fast I thought I might have been going). I also mentioned that had I been driving as fast as the officer claimed, and for as far the officer claimed, in his carefully annotated written statement, that he would’ve should’ve pulled me immediately (even if he might not have been able to cite me) as a risk to public safety instead of pacing me for 20 miles at night until we got into his jurisdiction. The judge seemed to like that statement, and he agreed to a 90 day deferred deal, and I made a $52 donation to the local boy’s and girl’s club thanksgiving dinner in lieu of court costs. I was an extra good boy for 90 days, and the citation was dismissed.

Ok, another one, excuse my poor wording, English is not my first language and sometimes I struggle with clarity since I struggle between Spanish sentence structuring and English Structure.

I got caught up with leaving him behind so my confusion was when I started slowing down and I quickly glanced down and it read 100, by the time I got to the next corner I got pulled over, didn’t get a chance to realize I was acually going as fast as I was, I was clocked at probably the equivalent of 95 mph and had time to break hard and get clocked at that speed, so I estimate I had to have been going at 120, so between a corner and coming off a change of elevation and accelerating out of it, I must have hit that speed.

Ican’t have worded it horribly wrong since this post has over 80 replies and just you two got confused...
